DAY 01/02 – Airport – Negombo

Take a moment to breathe in that warm air, fragrant with spices, the nearby ocean breeze, and feel the glow of the Sri Lankan sun on your skin! You’ll be greeted by the beauty of the country, and the coastal draws of Negombo upon your arrival. There’s so much to discover ahead, so after you arrive at your hotel, relax, unwind, stroll along the beach and spend the next day basking in the delicious warmth with eager anticipation.
DAY 03 – Negombo – Anuradhapura

Think Sri Lanka is just about elephants? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of these gentle giants in store on this trip, but today, you’ll be taking a jeep to Wilpattu National Park for a real safari experience. Wilpattu is the largest national park in the country, and home to a stunning variety of wildlife, including leopards and spotted deer, rainbow-coloured kingfishers, crested hawk eagles, and much more.
Catch a wily leopard lounging in the branches above, or perhaps a thirsty water buffalo in the park’s many “willus”, the naturally forming lakes spread across it. Whether you’re a keen bird spotter or just want to take a step on the wild side, this safari experience will be one to remember, so make sure you check your camera’s working before you leave! DAY 04/05 – Anuradhapura – Jaffna

Northern Sri Lanka hasn’t been on the tourist radar as it has only recently opened up to travellers, so it’s full of undiscovered treasures for you. As you drive up there after breakfast, look out for the ancient Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi , not just the oldest planted tree in the world, but the very tree that Lord Buddha sat beneath in search of enlightenment. You’ll also visit Isurumuniya in Anuradhapura, home of the beautiful reclining Buddha statue, as well as intriguing stone carvings – look out for the famous Lovers!
Then it’s on to Jaffna, with an included tour through the bustling and friendly city that rings with the many sights and sounds of traffic, cattle-drawn carts, fish markets and deliciously fragrant northern food! Take an included boat trip to see the sacred Nagadeepa temple, which legend says, was constructed by two warring serpent kings after the Buddha intervened in their quarrel. Then back to Jaffna, where you can whet your appetite with a taste of Sri Lankan cuisine, as you’ll learn to make a local favourite – crab curry. The included cookery class and dinner will introduce you to the special job of preparing and cooking a freshly caught crab with all the spices that make up a Jaffna curry. We promise you, you’ll be dreaming of that dinner long afterwards!
DAY 06/07 – Jaffna – Trincomalee

This is the “complete” Sri Lanka experience, after all – and it wouldn’t be complete without the awe-inspiring sight of seeing wonderful sea turtles, playful dolphins and magnificent whales before your eyes, would it? Over the next couple of days, your time in the port city of Trincomalee has plenty of ocean treats in store. Take an optional excursion to Pigeon Island, for some glorious snorkelling, where you can swim alongside turtles, colourful coral and sparkling shoals of fish. Or you can choose to go whale watching, and as Trincomalee has become a popular spot for humpback, sperm and blue whale sightings, this is really a special chance to see one of the most majestic creatures on the planet in person.
DAY 08/09 – Trincomalee – Dambulla

After exploring its natural wonders, it’s time to see a different side of Trinco with an included visit to the ancient Koneswaram temple, initially developed in 205 BC. Beautifully restored in the 1960s, you’re greeted with the awe-inspiring statue of Lord Shiva looking down on you as you approach. Remember that this is an important site for Hindu pilgrims, so dress modestly and enjoy the temple courteously! You’ll also see Fort Frederick, a 17th century military fort built by Portuguese colonizers on the site of the original temple.
Then head on an optional excursion (for a fee) to the magnificent Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that holds the best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. It’s impossible not to feel awed by the serenity of this special place – Dambulla is the spiritual centre for Buddhism in Sri Lanka, so dress modestly and show respect to worshippers. And keep a close eye on your belongings – the temple’s resident monkeys are cute, but notoriously cheeky! The next day takes you to the quiet beauty of everyday life in a Sri Lankan village, with an included Hiriwadunna Village tour. Go on a magical catamaran ride across the water, see the local ox carts draw their loads, walk through lush paddy fields alongside your guide, and learn more about village life here. You’ll also head to the bright and bustling local market to choose and buy your own vegetables, before learning how to cook some spicy local delicacies for lunch.
DAY 10 – Dambulla – Kandy

Your next destination is the culture capital of Sri Lanka – Kandy. On the way, take in a little more ancient wisdom with a visit to an Ayurvedic village, where you can learn more about the spices that form the foundation of Sri Lankan cuisine.
Then prepare to be overwhelmed by the kaleidoscopic beauty of Kandy! this picturesque city is the perfect mix of bustling tuk-tuk chaos, colourful road-side vendors calling out with fresh, cooling coconuts, grand colonial architecture, the beautiful Kandy Lake, and the peaceful rolling hills as the backdrop to it all. Head on an optional tour (for a fee) to these tranquil hills and visit the iconic Temple of the Sacred Tooth, where one of the Buddha’s teeth is kept in a holy shrine. The temple is regularly busy with worshippers and filled with the clouded scent of incense – be sure to dress appropriately, and soak up the special atmosphere.
Your time in Kandy is the perfect moment to enjoy Sri Lanka’s rich tradition of artisanal craft work, and perhaps even find some treasures to take home! Visit a Batik and wood carving centre where you’ll find intricately crafted pieces to choose from. You’ll also see another side of Kandy’s unique cultural treasures, with an evening dance performance from Kandyan dancers. With intricate gestures, elaborate costumes and the hypnotic sound of traditional drumming, it’s a truly unforgettable way to end your day here.
DAY 11 – Kandy – Haputhale

The gentle chug of the train, vivid green hills rolling past, and the occasional puff of the steam engine through the air… taking the train in Sri Lanka is always a memorable experience, but you’ll be dreaming of today’s journey from Nanu Oya to Haputhale for years to come. Truly timeless, the old fashioned train runs at a steady pace along a route first built in the 19th century, and the scenic journey will transport you to another era. Soak up the untouched countryside, views overlooking the hills, the scent of the greenery around you – and of course, make sure to take a few special photos to remember this moment!
Tea lovers will also want to rejoice, as today you’ll get to see how Sri Lanka’s finest export is carefully cultivated and processed. Enjoy an included visit to a tea plantation and factory, to get an insight into how the rich, golden taste of a classic Ceylon tea is produced from these special hills.
DAY 12 – Haputhale – Udawalawe

If you’ve never taken a tuk-tuk ride, then it’s time to tick that off your list today! Enjoy a breezy, scenic, and possibly just a little bumpy ride, as you take the transfer for an included visit to Lipton’s Seat. Heading there early in the morning gives you a chance to marvel at the incredible sights – you can see up to 7 districts from up here, and the Scottish tea baron, Sir Thomas Lipton, would often survey his tea empire from on high. Serene lakes framed by the deep green hills, mountains shrouded in mist, and the winding roads make this a memory of a lifetime. Be sure to pack an extra jacket though, as it can get surprisingly chilly at those heights.
If you want to see a little more of Sri Lanka’s wildlife, then an optional jeep safari to Udawalawe National Park is the perfect opportunity to enjoy seeing elephants grazing, leopards napping in the sun, herds of water buffalo and spotted deer, and a huge variety of other animals. DAY 13/16 – Udawalawe- Hikkaduwa

Your last few days in Sri Lanka are dedicated to enjoying its beautiful golden beaches, with some tranquil days in your own beach haven. But before you head to the sun lounger, there are still some treasures in store. First, prepare to have your heart stolen as you visit the wonderful Elephant Transit Home – a dedicated space set up to take care of abandoned and orphaned baby elephants. You’ll get to watch these beautiful babies at feeding time, while they enjoy a delicious cup of milk! There’s also more of the country’s rich history in store, with a visit to Galle Fort. As the best preserved sea fort in Asia, it shows you a glimpse of the colonial past of the country – as well as some stunning views of the ocean front.
Finally, it’s time to unwind! Enjoy the Sri Lankan sun on the soft, sandy beach, cool down with a relaxing swim in the clear Indian Ocean, or dive into some watersport adventure! Whether you’re craving tranquility or an adrenaline boost, you’re sure to wrap up your stay here in style, making sure you have plenty of incredible memories to recount before your departure on day 17.
